Flat Earth General / An Actual Flat Earth Question
« on: May 19, 2022, 08:53:00 PM »
I realize that this "flat earth site" has mostly evolved into a very conformist platform mainly used by people who believe, support and push whatever the mainstream views happen to be at any given time.

If there are any actual flat earthers left, here is a question for you to consider and hopefully respond to:

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Swa6uyc2hiw

Here is a question to go along with the video:

I have a lot of other questions I didn't voice in there but to me the geometry of a plate and the flat earth theory this ☝🏼 happening is absolutely impossible

Edit: Perhaps I should have posted this in Q & A. Apologies. Feel free to move it there if you feel that's wherre it belongs.

So here's a long video from about a year ago. It's a little long. It's a free site so of course you're free to go to immediately trashing the people. I really don't care what your opinion of the people is though. It's the content I would be interested in discussing.

Wise's Sig Frame by Frame I still can't make much sense of it can you? Maybe it's Turkish Swears.

Leave pictures from space out of it.

If the majority of experts were claiming a FE and all you had to go on was observations made from the ground would you have the confidence to declare the world was a globe?

Just saw a headline to that affect. I'll look it up later. Or maybe someone else will post details.

Suggestions & Concerns / Formal Debate Section
« on: May 24, 2018, 01:18:53 AM »
What if we had a section specifically for Forum Debates. As a rule, posters could not post in that section unless engaging in a formal debate. This would require, of course, a judge or group of judges.

The way to engage in a formal debate would be to challenge someone. If the challenge was accepted, they would approach a mod and ask permission to engage in a debate. (There could be a specific thread just for making debate requests or through PMs or whatever) The best format might be one on one, but at any rate the teams would have to have equal number of participants.

Because it would be a formal debate the section would be very strictly moderated. It would probably be best to have a small team of judges with opposing views if possible. Either way it would be important to try to judge objectively and acknowledge good points no matter who made them.

I think any of the curator/mod/admin team would make good judges. Also Jane if she was around.

Everyone could read the section but the only time regular posters could post is when a formal debate was happening and they were part of one of the debate teams.

The section could be open for debating anything, including the shape of the earth.

I think the end result would be a much higher quality of debate and much more interesting.

What do you think?

Technology, Science & Alt Science / Human Flight
« on: April 18, 2018, 10:21:02 AM »
Humans can't fly. The strength to weight ratio doesn't allow it. A lot of ways to overcome this problem have been invented. One of these is wingsuits, which allow for a swift downward glide. There has been at least one successful landing, maybe a few more, but the usual method is to pull a 'chute at some point. Gliders can land successfully but are a quite a big apparatus, which I would classify as a machine. Powered wing suits have been used. They are pretty much a machine as well.

I have wondered if it would be possible to make a suit that was minimal size and complexity, that would reduce the weight enough that it would be possible for a human to fly using their own power. Reducing your weight would be accomplished using a suit that was less dense than air. But even filled with hydrogen, the lightest element, the suit would need to be very large. What if we made a solid suit from a very strong, light material, such as graphene?, and created a very strong vacuum? To become density neutral you would still need to increase the size of you and your suit by a lot! But the idea is not to become density neutral, it's to change the weight to strength ratio enough to allow flight.

Another cool idea that's been tried, but without too much success as far as I know, is jetpacks. With improved computing power, could jetpacks become more stable?

What are your thoughts?

Flat Earth General / Could Trump Keep the Secret if He Knew?
« on: December 04, 2017, 05:26:24 PM »
Would Trump have spilled the beans that the earth was flat in some late night tweeting spree if he knew the earth was actually flat? Perhaps that was what the covfefe tweet was all about?  He couldn't resist tweeting about it but managed to restrain himself and did it in some sort of code? Or perhaps it's an acronym used by those who are in the know?

Does anyone know more about this?

Also, the quote below caught my eye:

If the government was covering up evidence of a flat earth, then they seem to be doing a better job at this than anything else.

What's our response to that?

Lump
By The Presidents of the United States of America

Lump sat alone in a boggy marsh
Totally emotionless except for her heart
Mud flowed up into lump's pajamas
She totally confused all the passing pihranas

She's lump, she's lump
She's in my head
She's lump, she's lump, she's lump
She might be dead

Lump lingered last in line for brains
And the one she got was sorta rotten and insane
Small things so sad that birds could land
Is lump fast asleep or rockin' out with the band?

She's lump, she's lump
She's in my head
She's lump, she's lump, she's lump
She might be dead

Lump was limp and lonely and needed a shove
Lump slipped on a kiss and tumbled into love
She spent her twenties between the sheets
Life limped along at sub-sonic speeds

She's lump, she's lump
She's in my head
She's lump, she's lump, she's lump
She might be dead

Is this lump outta my head?
I think so
Is this lump outta my head?
I think so
Is this lump outta my head?
I think so
Is this lump outta my head?

Imagine if you took the slightly curved surface of a pancake and extended that curve indefinitely in all directions. What would you end up with? Something that looked "flat as a pancake" which was actually a small part of a much larger sphere! Pancakes are the ultimate tool for explaining why earth looks flat when it's actually globular.

Flat Earth General / Summary of FE/GE Theory - What Do You Think?
« on: April 06, 2017, 02:42:07 PM »
I have followed FET for about six months now. As many posters know, I am one of the "gullible" GE believers. However, I do enjoy following along and trying to understand the various arguments for a FE and against a GE including all the other related phenomena. (ie. Motion of the earth, gravity etc.)

When I first became aware of the Ice Wall model I thought it was kind of clever because it explained how you could circumnavigate a FE while travelling east or west. One of the main reasons that model fails IMO is because of distances in the SH. Clever arguments are fun. Blatant denial of something so easily verifiable, and that has been verified by millions is just silly. Differences in observations regarding the rotation of stars in the two hemispheres is another strong reason this model fails. Again, blatant denial of something observed and verified by millions is weak. (To other GEs: I think the Ice Wall model is actually a great big straw-man that the serious FEers put out front so we can come in and destroy it. They're watching us and laughing up their sleeve 'cause they don't believe it any more than we do.)

I can't comment on any of the other FE models because I don't understand them well enough. I would like to understand them better.

Dens-pressure. Newtons Universal Law of Gravitation and the formulas which are grounded in this law have a strong correlation with what we observe in the real world. While no one is claiming to understand the underlying cause for this apparent property of matter, the aforementioned correlation is so strong that the law is very close to being undeniably true. Conversely, dens-pressure is almost impossible to understand let alone verify with measurements and observations from the real world. The dens-pressure model is very weak because of this. For it to gain any credibility we need to be able to verify it with observations, measurements and calculations.

UA. My argument against this is mostly one from incredulity. But I think there is a lot to be incredulous about! The amount of extremely unlikely things that must be happening in order for this to be a viable theory are quite numerous IMO. If I were to apply Occam's Razor to this theory I believe I would have no choice but to dismiss it.

So this is my summary so far. I realize I have no control of this thread after I have started it, but I would like it to be a thread where we post our conclusions and our strongest reason for having reached these conclusions. GE or FE. There are countless other threads in which to debate these issues. If you see something you strongly disagree with and want to debate I would like to cordially invite you to find an appropriate thread or start a new one.

Cheers!

Boots.

This is a thread where you can present logical sounding arguments that are actually logical fallacies. Feel free to engage in a debate which someone else has started or start your own. Since we have the whole upper fora to wrangle with the whole FE/GE issue I would prefer if that didn't completely overtake this thread.
