Very well done Rushy! That's the risk!

That PizzaPlanet hacked your site to make you look bad. If that isn't what you're implying, you should be able to correct me and clear this up easily.

My suggestion: only allow Tom Bishop to post if he finally changes his avatar.

I always imagined that was actually him. Can anyone confirm whether or not that is the case?

Either way, I concur. lol

Yes it is him. But he could at least update it or have some variety. Perhaps pictured in his workplace, with his burger tongs in hand?

No it isn't lol

Our friends in 'Indonesia' have attacked us again (and what timing...)

Again with the implication! Comes across as very unprofessional.

There is certainly a pattern on when it happens; I'll leave it up to our users to think about this.

What is the pattern? I mean, I understand that you are implicitly blaming SexWarrior (or maybe tfes.org as a whole), but is there actually a pattern to these issues which indicates any particular person is to blame?
I am doing no such thing. Please don't put words in my mouth.

Apologies if I misinterpreted your meaning. Can you tell us about the pattern you mentioned?

I'm seeing a lot of 502: Bad Gateway errors when trying to load any page on the domain, probably once every 5 page updates or so.

Came here to check on the status of the merger discussion, hit https://theflatearthsociety.org/home/ first and noticed that it looked somewhat different.

I'm sure Parsifal will be able to provide more detailed information, but our forum and its server receive roughly one update every one or two months, variously adding features, security improvements, optimizations, and so forth. A log of these updates can be found here.

13
What I'm seeing, reviewing the metrics, is that our forum is now ahead of yours in speed, features, and regularity of updates.

Hmm. I am also interested in those metrics you've used. Is there some place where I can easily view the update history of this site? I don't see anything apart from the pinned post in the Announcements board from April of 2016, describing a transition to a new server.

14
A lot of us come back for a bit when the topic of re-unification is brought up to see how the discussion goes. Can't speak for everyone, but I think a lot of us are interested and in favor of the idea.

15
I responded to PizzaPlanet, not Parsifal.

You started talking about Intikam before Rushy did, but when he offers his insight it's suddenly off-topic? Besides, the issue of what to do with Intikam absolutely is relevant, considering that this is now an informal discussion about reunification.

Was I the first to bring up intikam?

No, but I don't see the relevance. You made a four paragraph post about Intikam in this thread, Rushy responded to that post, and you chided him for being off-topic. That doesn't make any sense to me. Anyway, we should probably drop this as it isn't really furthering this discussion.

There is no option that I agree with in ur poll.

The two forums continue to exist. Having more than one forum isn't a big deal. Take the acronym out of the word filter.  If someone spams links (which hasn't happened since the split that I know of and I only saw Tom Bishop doing it), treat them like any other spammer.

I'll add options that you suggest.  There's some nuance here that I'm probably missing.

I think there might be a bit too much nuance.

18
Interesting. John, it seems that your analysis of the chatter around this forum might be a bit lacking. Would you be open to the idea of taking another poll? Nothing too formal, just something to gauge interest.

19
I said I wouldn't, and I won't; I said this when I discussed bringing this idea forward amongst our team.

What I would really like to know is why you said you wouldn't. "Because I said so" isn't a very satisfying answer.

I came to the conclusion based off the chatter I see around this forum as well as what I see in our moderators section and from the discussions last time. As I've said, folks have also approached me about it specifically.

What do you think of the results of this poll? Or this post from Daniel?

I think the reunification would have a positive effect for everyone involved.  I'm not sure if anyone's noticed, but the forums here have had a couple technical hiccups over the years.  The tfes.org admins will be able to handle those technical problems much better than I can.  If the tfes.org forums now are any indication, things will run much faster and we'll deal with less down-time.  Plus they're more active on the forums than I generally am.  The reunification also brings a bunch of other very active users back into the unified Society.  It also brings Thork back, I guess, but we'll try to cope.

Apart from the tfes.org/theflatearthsociety.org forums merger, we're also hoping to make the homepage much more active.  I've done a decent job of adding to the library and image gallery over the past year or so, but I'd love to have other people contributing to the front page as well.  I'm seeing this as an opportunity to be more inclusive all around.

Wilmore and I have been talking with the tfes.org guys and I think everyone's pretty happy to end this rift and start focusing on improving the Society, working on new FES-related projects and spreading the word about Flat Earth Theory.

Has he since told you that he's changed his mind? What about the posts in this very thread expressing support for the idea? Can you show me a single thread where the general consensus arrived at is that a forum merge would be a bad thing for both societies?

20
Perhaps you are right.

I'm fine with continuing to discuss the matter. [...]

Since the forum unification is obviously the crux of the issue, I'm a bit disappointed that you ignored my questions about it. I genuinely don't understand why you're so resolutely opposed to combining the two databases, or how you came to the conclusion that nobody wants that to happen.

21
The negotiations were short

22
JD, what would the disadvantages of unifying the fora be, in your mind? Unless I've missed something, the closest thing to an explanation you gave is this:

There is no way that our two forums can or will work as one forum, and that is a point I cannot budge on. The simple fact is nobody wants it. This is a concern of my users, and I am responding appropriately to it.

which just isn't true. Plenty of people from both communities want it, and there is lots of documented evidence for that which I can pull from both sites if necessary. Can you tell me how you came to the conclusion that "nobody wants it"?

23
Any reunification plan that doesn't involve merging the two fora seems like a waste of time, to me.

24
He was antagonised and made fun of for your entertainment and when he reacted you banned him on account of 1 members dumb suggestion.

If you converse with him in a respectful manner then he will extend the same courtesy

You should be on the same side as you both agree in a flat earth right? Unless you are as he said 'controlled opposition'

Build a bridge. For you to suggest his permaban as a 'condition' of a reconciliation, it just shows the kind of people you are and that this side could easily do without you. Seriously I had support for you admins getting along until I read that.

İntikam has just as much right as anyone else to be here. Stop disrespecting people and you may find they are much nicer to deal with.

Pretty much everything you just said is incorrect. Intikam was pretty zealously doxxing and impersonating a member of the other site. That's a serious violation of both society's rules.

25
That point is non-negotiable from our side, and for me personally. He remains permabanned.

Everything's negotiable. How about this: If Intikam ever commits such an act after the merger, he gets perma-banned. And as part of the merger you get a free bottle of port just for being so agreeable!

Nah, he was truly engaging in some dangerous and bizarrely obsessive behavior. We don't need him.

26
I can't say I recall a spam campaign either.

Technical Support / Re: Wiki?
« on: September 09, 2017, 12:34:14 AM »
The reason that the current wiki is so terrible is that we let random folks contribute to it - Flatist and Roundist alike. Most the folks who worked on it, giving up their rights to any part of it, ran off and stole this content to form their own society filled with nonsense. This could easily be used against them, which we won't do because we are the better man and any man with sense enough to know the earth is flat has their right to viewing their own voice.

How, specifically, could it be used against them?

28
The other site is a spin off of this one. A few years ago, John Davis moved servers, or upgraded the server (whichever, I don't remember), he used an old save of the forum and a few weeks worth of posts were lost. They got pissed off and moved to Robosteve's forum, which already existed, but they changed it to be exactly the same as this one. Anyway, John recovered the lost posts, but it was too late, their butts were hurt.

That was just the final catalyst. It isn't as if things were just fine before a month's worth of posts were lost (and then partially restored some time later).

Yes, he was annoyed at Pizza's Sig.  After all of the lecturing that PP did about acting like adults and coming to a compromise, PP went and did that.

Emphasis mine. Wasn't that signature more than a year old?

That site is deader than flat earth belief itself.  And that's pretty dead.

The upper fora are pretty slow, but the more interesting lower fora are literally throbbing with human life.
