You can't even figure out how progressive taxes work.  Replying to your long list of stupid shit isn't worth my time.

Progressive taxes "work" by assigning tiers to income. But ultimately, such things do not work. Why not?

Suppose I have $9,999 and I'm being charged 10% or $999.90 but suppose my friend makes $10,001 and they bump him up to the next threshold of "people who earn over $10,000." And he pays 25% of his income because this is the next tier up (usually it isn't, they have about eight or ten tiers so this works more gradually, but it still arbitrarily bumps, making people work to earn just under the threshold to keep more of their own money). For having $2 more, he pays about $2500 instead.

If tax were flat, he would be treated the same as anyone else. He'd pay $1000.10 instead.

I can indeed figure out how progressive taxes don't work. Now you have to read my post.
Once again, proving my point.
You have been ignored for common interest of mankind.

No, that's not the way income tax brackets work, as that would be crazy.    In this case what would actually happen is he would carry on paying 10% on the $10,000 then pay 25% on everything earnt over $10,000.  In this case $1 so he would pay 25c more tax.

An example with real tax brackets would be someone earning $10,000 would be paying $1,000 in income tax, as that is what you pay up to the $11,600 threshold.  If he then got a pay increase to $12,000 he would still pay $1,000 dollars on the first $10k then 12% of everything over that - so an extra $48.  His wages will have gone up by $2k and his tax bill would go from $1000 to $1048.

See when lower tax brackets are already next to nothing, by implementing a 25%on the biggest trading parteners for basically all things, the trump govt has essentially circumvented the congress raised taxes on the lower tiers to fund the taxbreals given to the upper tiers.

How are you not seeing this?

You just like to be like "nitpick minor detail is wrong, so you're stupid."
That's a logical fallacy called argument from fallacy and/or logic chopping fallacy. Followed by your classic argumentum ad lapidem, where you can't tell me why I'm wrong but I'm absurd anyway. Oh and ad hominem as well! Three for three!

Yes, I know that income tax brackets are less extreme than that.

But that is in fact exactly how income tax brackets work.
https://www.irs.gov/filing/federal-income-tax-rates-and-brackets
Quote
10%    $0    $11,600
12%    $11,601    $47,150
22%    $47,151    $100,525
24%    $100,526    $191,950
32%    $191,951    $243,725
35%    $243,726    $609,350
37%    $609,351    And up

Notice how it goes up 2% when you are only one dollar over? So no, the real jump isn't 10% to 25% (I even said it wasn't in the post), but the $1 jump is very real. And if you'll notice, the jump from 12% to 22% is very real. If I make
$47,149 then I pay $5,657.88 but if I make two dollars more than that, the next tax bracket up is a very real increase to $10,373.22 in taxes.

Here's the fun part. We're supposedly told that this is to punish the rich for their corrupt business practices (or some crap like that), but they stop the tax brackets after $610,000 but they alarmingly bump taxes only at around $50,000. Around 50% of all households in the US make less than $50,000 so this is very definitely no skin off the backs of the ultra-rich, while the average taxpayer is smashed hard. I can't imagine paying $10,373.22 in taxes when I paid $5,657.88 only $2 dollars lower in income. That is truly outrageous.

I'm not yet old enough to be going senile. But you are very definitely young enough not to know anything about anything, particularly taxes. I've seen your arguments on the other tax thread and you can't justify why taxes that for years have made the poor even worse shouldn't be done away with. So you just double down on the idea that I don't know what I'm talking about.  Yeah? Well, I know what being poor is like. And I know what being taxed when poor is like. And there is no minimum on taxes that show up on a paycheck. So instead of admitting that indeed these taxes suck, you claim my ignorance, then talk about how taxes have made things so high. Hmmm? I shop at Amazon, predominantly for things like anime. Haven't noticed any difference in prices. Ikki Tousen is $13. Down from $19.99. Explain again how tariffs are raising prices? Seems more like they're excusing price gouging. Like so.

And another thing! Speaking of price gouging, they claim that a chicken flu created high egg prices. Yet we've seen fake diseases before, such as COVID. So how do we know they didn't just kill all the egg-laying chickens just to raise prices? Kinda funny how day one of Trump presidency, the airlines all go wrong and the egg market collapses! And it's really funny how the poultry market isn't all affected! Chicken is $2.99 but eggs are $4.49. Don't you need eggs to make chicken prices cheap? Which comes first, the chicken or the egg?

Tax brackets determine how much tax you pay based on your income level. In a progressive tax system, different portions of your income are taxed at different rates, meaning you pay a lower rate on the initial income and higher rates on income that exceeds certain thresholds.
You blame Trump for wanting to downsize the tax system (not under any delusions of altruism here, he wants to do it for the same exact reason I did something once).
[Insert long story about installing DVD player to a school computer here]
When you help yourself, you help others.
And this is Trump. Being a self-interested guy, he knows about tax audits, so he doesn't want them.

And here you useless twits are, deluding yourself into thinking that nobody needs help.
You think taxes help people, so you uselessly defend them. "Look at how high tariffs have made prices!" No, what I see is the effect of people pricing new products to profit, and claiming that this is the result of added shipping costs. Or people actively sabotaging the new system because they are petty grasping idiots who would rather 300 million (the rough population of the US) suffer here, and 8 billion worldwide suffer because they can't fucking stand that this tax system might work in the long run.

You are the 1%. Not of wealth though. You're the 1% of people who doesn't care for your fellow man and instead goes around trying to punish people for success, because you think wealth means people hoard. Because that's what you would do.

If America saves money, they can pass their saving on to third world countries through trade or charity. The same money that USAID mismanaged through woke agenda. If you keep 600 of them instead of 10,000 and focus more on nation building than handouts,  each country can thrive on its own terms. Or we can keep paying money to these countries, only to see it not ever get to people who need help.
https://www.newsweek.com/lefts-goal-usaid-reform-finally-accomplished-trump-opinion-2029951
Because it goes mainly to countries, not their people. And because USAID funds sketchy things like political intervention.

Yeah, so then you're claiming that because I got the part (how big the tax brackets are) wrong, that the whole is wrong. But unlike a flat tax, which actually just takes 10% whether you have $50 or $50,000,000, each bracket abruptly upgrades. You are correct in that I've never done my own taxes though. At least, I've never made over $11,000.

If I am wrong, there is a calculator.
https://goodcalculators.com/us-tax-brackets-calculator/
Okay, what appears to happen is that we get a percentage of percentage. That is to say, up to $11600 the amount taxed is 10% + up to 47,150 (minus previous) is 12% + up to 100,525 (minus previous) is 22% + etc.
In other words, rather than a simple to calculate rising percent, it is a stupid derpy additive percent. And they don't think to show this equation on any online tax materials... There's two problems with this. First, it works out to almost 10% in the lower cases, with math needlessly inflicted on the American population (so that tax accountants can be paid since the rest of America doesn't understand the system; which leads to third parties potentially defrauding people). Second, if you assume, like a regular person does, that this means a change in percent (instead of the convoluted additive math formula), then you overpay, and the IRS is either honest and gives you the money back, or doesn't notice the mistake (or is dishonest) and as I say, you lose twice as much because you understood it wrong. Do you REALLY want a tax on the stupid?
https://goodcalculators.com/us-salary-tax-calculator/#2024-Federal-Tax-Brackets-Tax-Rates
Quote
Using the United States Tax Calculator is fairly simple.

First, enter your 'Gross Salary' amount where shown.
Next, select the 'Filing Status' drop-down menu and choose which option applies to you. If you are filing taxes and are married, you have the option to file your taxes along with your partner.
Next, select the 'State' drop-down menu and choose whichever state you live in. This section allows for state tax to be calculated, although the option to not consider state tax is given.
Next, enter the number of dependents that you will be declaring in the box marked 'No. Dependents'.
Finally, if there are any other deductions that you would like to apply then enter them in the 'Monthly Deductions' box. This includes any retirement plan contributions that you may be putting aside each month.

Anyone looking at that tax bracket would listen to them say it's fairly simple, and skip their directions to try to do a simple percentage (basically every person with any ADHD does this). No sane person would think to do additive percents. Nor is that mentioned on the "simple" directions. Half the time, you forgot something on your income that Uncle Sam knows about, but you're the one who has to fill out the form as an unpaid tax worker.
You have to read about eight more paragraphs to find out the way taxes are done is completely alien to any sensible system and relies on tax accountants being honest, the IRS being honest, and the Federal Reserve being honest. That's a big ask. "That's a yuge ask," to quote Trump.

So let's compare progressive tax to a 10% flat tax.
$47151 is our value:
10% of $11600 +
12% of $35550 +
22% of $1=
$5426.22

10% of 47151=
$4715.10

Not only did they weasel out about $700 more, but they had you do seven pages of tax instructions instead of one line of intuitive math (it's about 11.5% as real percent, not 22%). So that when you get it wrong, you cannot figure out why.

Please explain why you justify this! I admit my original understanding was wrong, but nothing of the table explained why it was wrong, I had to actually look at the math that the calculator was doing.

Instead of doing loads of fake cumulative math, someone should crunch the real percents, show that on a table, and have that as the new progressive math. It would likely move from 10% to about 30% up to the top tier. No tax on the stupid, you just enter it into a calculator, and you're done for the day. So $631,000 moves from:
11600 (10%)+
35550 (12%)+
53375 (22%)+
91425 (24%)+
51775 (32%)+
365625 (35%)+
21650 (37%)=
$191657.75
(All of which I'll forget tomorrow, nevermind the next tax season. FFS!)

to

631000 (30.5%) =
$192455

Or you could do 0.5% non-cumulative percent every $10,000 (meaning $80,000 pays 4%), stopping when you get to 30.5%. Most of the people making under $10,000 a year would thank you.
Or... I could pay $63,100 on taxes with a flat 10% tax.
Or... I could just pay more sales tax and throw away the form.
Or... I could throw away the whole lot, and let foreigners do math. I'd rather do that. And I'll pay more on the occasional good, or just stop buying from them.

Math is the curse of the American people. The more math the American people have to do to keep their money, the more oppressed they are.

As for flat vs progressive...
Yes, it's cheaper.  It brings in less revenue to the government.  Now, do some math and figure out what would the flat tax need to be if you kept the same income level as progressive taxes.

Yeah, no. It doesn't.

Whatever Trump may do, I voted against another liberal who I know will never cut taxes.

Do you understand the words that I am saying? People vote for politicians based on what they hope they will do, not what they actually do. Trump may indeed fail to deliver on tax reduction. We vote for him in hopes that he remembers what it means to be investigated by IRS.

As for that, there are hopeful signs.

No taxes if you earn less that $150k is a possibility. So is outright ending the federal income tax, replacing it with tariffs. And yet the left STILL accuses him of favoring the highest incomes! Seriously, where do you come up with that?

And Turbotax WOULD donate to him. It is in their best interest to stay in business. But you need to remember something. Lobbies are not allowed to bribe. Bribe, as in, to use money to influence behavior. So their money is effectively a gift. He can take the money, and do literally anything from raising taxes to making their jobs unnecessary. If I were him, I would either blow the money on various things I like, or video myself burning it then send that to them. Fuck TurboTax. Making people's lives miserable for years. Oh yes, they claim to help with taxes, but they lobby to keep them complicated.

Just make it cheap in China and exempt it from the tariffs.

Putin didn't start the war.

This dumb broad did.

Let me explain something.

Russia's national policy is based on using land mass and buffer states as a cushion against land invasion. They want to enter Russia, they have to go through the countries in the way. So when the above blithering idiot mentions that Ukraine can join NATO and become an independent country as part of the West, Russia considers it fighting words.

Ukraine's current leader is not, as you assume, a civilized Western leader. He's a spoiled brat who squandered literal billions in USAID handouts, and is upset that the US is not continuing to play this game. This is quite literally the plot of the satire, "The Mouse That Roared."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mouse_That_Roared

Ukraine should shut up, surrender, let Russia use it as a buffer state, with a stern warning to Russia that these buffer states are offered in agreement  of no further aggression.

Now let's talk about another dumb broad.

(Pffft, they have some pagan dude talk about the "great spirit who dwells in the sky")
What's the problem here? As a good Christian, shouldn't I show mercy to foreigners and people struggling with gender identity? Especially since I'm kinda trans-adjacent?

Well, that would be true except:
1. It won't help, because legal immigration actually worsens third world problems through taking the talented out of the country.

2. What illegal immigration (not legal immigration) really does is help the slave trade.

*sigh*  Ukraine held a referendum and declared its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.  The USSR dissolved shortly thereafter.

Right, because that worked so well with 1930s Germany. ::)

Ok so let me get this straight.  Of all the member nations bordering Russia, only UKraine is a problem.  Not only that but since NATO is a defense pact and not an offense alliance, Russia is afraid of a land invastion from... What, the EU?  Of which most nations bordering Russia are already members?

There is a big flaw with letting Russia use Ukraine as a buffer state... Russia can attack or counter-attack NATO faster, not to mention Ukraine has wealth that Russia may use in a Russia-NATO war (which could escalate to a world war).

And it makes NATO look weak for not handling a threat to them.

Suppose, Germany wants to take Russia, as they did in World War II.  Now, they already have Poland (Germany that is), so you have signal that maybe they are planning to invade Russia. They then march through either Ukraine or Belarus. These parts may or may not be called Russia (doesn't matter, so long as they do their job of giving warning). A buffer state is like setting up a watchtower run by your little brother. "Hey troops are invading here, big bro!" "Alright, little bro, we'll be right there!" In return for being the first area to be attacked, Russia sends its tanks to defend that area. Ideally. In any case, this also helps them, as they have advance notice of any incoming invasions. Instead of a border wall like US, they have an entire state screening immigration. If Belarus or Tajikistan doesn't like the looks of certain new visitors, this at best acts as a loose alliance, letting them drive off these invaders.
Quote
Buffer states function as neutral territories situated between two rival powers, helping to prevent direct conflict by providing a space for diplomacy and negotiation. They often bear the consequences of tensions between the powers, as their existence can lead to increased risks of invasion or occupation.
But what happens when they side against Russia? Suddenly Ukraine adopts Biden's screwy immigration policies instead of Russia's or its own, and Ukraine won't notify Russia of any incoming threats, instead letting troops and tanks roll past them into Russia.

Both Trump and Biden attended Pope Francis's funeral. I want you to think about this. Trump is not known as a particularly pious individual. He only goes to church on certain occasions, and once used tear gas to get a photo op for a church. Biden is known for large donations to the world's charity. On the surface, Biden seems like the better man. Except, while the last Pope lived, much of the Catholic church condemned Biden's stance on abortions, and Trump is attending a funeral to pay his respects to a man who doesn't even like him.
Let's talk about that world charity thing and whether throwing US tax money at poverty really helped anyone. It created open borders,  the effects of which my parents saw during their last trip to visit my mother-in-law. They stayed at a hotel, where they complained several times of wanting blankets and breakfast, but the hotel was instead primarily used to house illegal workers.
It's one thing to help the poor out. It's quite another when the people of your own country feel like immigrants, and whoever is newest is catered to at your expense. Are those poor any less poor over here? Not if it makes businesses have barely money to pay people living wages, while you undercut those wages by giving people maybe $1.50 to do a job because you call Americans too lazy to do a job after you've raised the minimum wage to $15. Americans don't benefit from not getting regular work at those wages, and immigrants don't benefit from the under the table economy.  What about our overseas handouts? No, what happened was that all the USAID money got absorbed by ppl like Volodymyr Zelensky, not by citizens. It's like this. Suppose you donate two billion to the people of Ukraine. That, divided by each person, winds up being  $51.71 for each person's relief.  Since money spreads a bit different overseas, this stretch a bit farther maybe, depending on the shape of their currency. But they are also fighting a war, so you're probably also giving them that money to buy weapons, not to feed themselves. So that "humanitarian" gesture was to grease the wheels for a war that you're using to distract from your rising gas prices (Wag the Dog), and the threat of nuclear attack against US looms like an albatross. That's even assuming it was divided evenly among the people, and Zelensky didn't get a hefty chunk. Further, when I searched "how Biden's money affected Ukraine" I got a fact check (which I usually distrust, because it's a loud denouncement of a question that needs to be asked) about Biden using Ukraine to launder money.

One of these presidents screwed with American taxes for international charity (effectively using money he didn't have to at best provide a scapegoat for rising prices, and at worst to maybe get richer while doing so) and created an inflation crisis. One is paying his respects even if the rest of the world does not understand him. One of these presidents actually is talking about ending a war another started, yet the first is praised for humanitarian action. Yes, Ukraine money was spent on really good tanks. Tanks, but no tanks. Give the American people their money back for a war that your bimbo VP caused.
