So why is the north pole in the centre?

that means south is DOWN, so ALL compasses would point down no matter where they are!

Correct, they point to the magnetic poles. which for all intesive purposes is the north and south poles of the earth.

Imagine a series of lines around the world. They travel from magnetic North to magnetic South. The compass needle lines up with the imaginary lines.

thanks for the picture!

as i was trying to point out, if the South magnetic pole was UNDER earth, all the magnetic lines would go up/down, not north/south.
