that means south is DOWN, so ALL compasses would point down no matter where they are!

Correct, they point to the magnetic poles. which for all intesive purposes is the north and south poles of the earth.

as i was trying to point out, if the South magnetic pole was UNDER earth, all the magnetic lines would go up/down, not north/south.
