This is why I've become an advocate for population growth. In any system there is always a limit of some sort. Forgive me for lack of biology, but there is a mechanism that limits cell growth once they hit a level of population density. From what I understand, the rate population growth has declined in wealthier countries that have cities with greater population densities; Tokyo, L.A., New York and London Come to mind. Conversely the rate of population growth is greater in third world countries where population density is lower.
There was also an article in BBC, FOCUS magazine a few years ago. The feature article was "Why Civilizations Fail." There was an interesting article about the Easter Islands. Essentially once all the trees were cut down, they could no longer support their way of life. Apparently this is also when they became cannibalistic.
In Australia there are issues with housing, medical, education, unemployment, urban sprawl, water, energy, global warming, pollution and so on. From my perspective it is easier maintain the current population level and improve the average quality of life than it is to increase and improve a growing population. I would also note that there is likely to be an adverse effect on social and mental well being in higher levels of population.
I don't believe in conspiracies but I do believe in greed. Greed is for the benefit of the few at the cost of the many. Business should be about business not about profit and growth. I get that business is about making money but it should not just be about making money. There is more to it than that. No every organization can grow indefinitely all the time. Someone some where always losses out.
