My favorite quote, whats yours
« on: February 10, 2010, 02:17:10 AM »
The buggers finally learned that we humans value each and every individual human life. We don't throw our forces away because every soldier is the queen of one-member hive, But they've learned this lesson just in time for it to be hopelessly wrong

"For we humans do, when the cause is sufficient, spend our own lives. We throw ourselves onto the grenade to save our buddies in the foxhole. We rise out of the trenches and charge the entrenched enemy and die like maggots under a blowtorch. We strap bombs on our bodies and blow ourselves up in the midst of our enemies. We are, when the cause is sufficient, insane."

They don't believe we will use Dr. Device because the only way to use it is to destroy our own ships in the process. It was obvious to everyone that this was a suicide run. Win or loose there would be no human survivors.

They have never seen us make a move like that. They don't understand that,

"yes humans will always act to preserve their own lives-except for the times when they don't!"

In the buggers experience autonomous beings do not sacrifice themselves. Once they understood our autonomy their defeat was sown. Did Ender know this? It was Enders previous victories that taught the enemy to think of us as one kind of creature, when really we are something quite different. He pretended all this time that humans were rational beings, when we are really the most terrible monsters these poor aliens could ever have conceived of in their nightmares.

According to Google, that quote comes from "Ender's Shadow", right?  I haven't read it.  Is it any good?

Yes it is very good. Well in my opinion. I like all of the books from both series though, my favorites are the first ones from both (Enders game and Enders shadow)

"Look, they don't care who knocks out those ammunition dumps. The only reason we're going is because that bastard Cathcart volunteered us."

"Oh I know all that," Clevinger assured him, he gaunt face pale and his agitated eyes swimming in sincerity. "But the fact remains that the ammunition dumps are still standing. You know very well that I don't approve of Colonel Cathcart any more than you do. But it's not for us to determine what targets must be destroyed or who's to destroy them or -"

"Or who gets killed doing it? And why?"

"Yes, even that. We have no right to question -"

"You're insane!"

"- no right to question -"

"Do you really mean that it's not my business how or why I get killed and that it is Colonel Cathcart's? Do you really mean that?"

"Yes, I do," Clevinger insisted, seeming unsure. "There are men entrusted with winning the war who are in a much better position than we are to decide what targets have to be bombed."

"We are talking about two different things," Yossarian answered with exaggerated weariness. "You are talking about the relationship of the Air Corps to the infantry. You are talking about winning the war, and I am talking about winning the war and keeping alive."

"Exactly," Clevinger snapped smugly. "And which do you think is more important?"

"To whom?" Yossarian shot back. "Open your eyes, Clevinger. It doesn't make a damned bit of difference who wins the war to someone who's dead."
