WASHINGTON — The United States launched an airstrike in Somalia against suspected terrorist targets — the second such attack this month, defense officials said Wednesday.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the action was carried out in secret, provided few details about the strike by an Air Force AC-130 gunship earlier this week and were uncertain whether the intended target was killed.

One official suggested that early indications showed that no high-value target was killed or captured.

How many innocent people were killed?

In Mogadishu on Wednesday, gunmen launched several mortars
at the capital's international airport, killing at least two people and
wounding several others, witnesses said.

And those were only the deaths caused by gunmen, not the American bombers.

To be fair, the 'legitimate' government of Somalia did ask for US and Ethiopian assistance.

Just a technicality, but the AC-130 is not a bomber.  It is a ground support attack aircraft.

Which brings up the question of why you would use it "against suspected terrorist targets."  Wouldn't something a bit more low-profile a bit more suited to that sort of work?  I'm sure the miniguns, 20 mm cannons, 40 mm cannons, and/or 105 mm howitzers those bad boys have a tendency to carry aren't exactly suited for "surgical strikes."

The AC is not a low pass attack aircraft, instead it 'orbits' its target, laying rounds and shells directly into a target from all sides. It's about as surgical as an aircraft can get.

I know that this wouldn't solve EVRYTHING and would probably start more than it would stop, but I say that if it was sure as hell possible, we should have nuked the shit out of the middle east so it turned to glass.

And I know I am in the wrong geographic are, but I felt like mentioning that.

Hah, reminds me of an old Orwell DoubleSpeak award winner:

1974
Colonel David H. E. Opfer, USAF Press Officer in Cambodia

After a U.S. bombing raid, he told some reporters: "You always write it's bombing, bombing, bombing. It's not bombing! It's air support!"

Quote from: "dysfunction"
To be fair, the 'legitimate' government of Somalia did ask for US and Ethiopian assistance.

Out of the two statements quoted above, dysfunction's is the more racist of the two for the simple reason that it is more harmful.  I do not concur with Red Skull's attıtude on this, but at least he does not endorse the bombing.  Dysfunction's statement implies that terrorism and killing is okay as long as the americans are doing it.  His statement would be more honest if it began with 'To be racist,...' and the legitimate government he referred to is illegitimate.  The pro-american warlords in Somalia are the real butchers, and the Somalian people do not desire them as their rulers.  These are the ones who requested american assistance almost certainly after the very wording of the request was first relayed to them from Washington over the CIA's secure communications network.  Dysfunction is obviously ignorant of the ways in which the CIA functions as this is nothing new.  The pro-american Somali warlords have received more military supplies courtesy of the CIA than their enemies have access to, but they have not held on to power simply because they do not have the backing of the people.  The US government is literally fighting the people of Somalia.

It is good to read that most of us see that this racist american terrorism is inexcusably horrible unlike a minorıty of observers such as Erasmus whose overrated reasoning prevents him from acknowledging the obvious longer than the average person due to his pro-western bias.  Anyway, down with the US and hoo-ray for the group on this one.  Rick_James comments in particular have consistently been very keen on political events.
