Just when I thought it couldn't get funnier....
« on: June 04, 2006, 11:36:05 AM »
One of you flat-earthers said you don't believe in gravity, you believe in "intelligent falling."  After some research, I found that intelligent falling is basically god telling objects to fall.

Here's the kicker:

The scientist that came up with this brilliant concept argued it this way:

"There are gaps in the logic of gravity, thats why it can't be true."

Awesome.  We know for a fact that mass does attract.  We know for a fact that larger objects of mass attract more, but....  We don't know exactly why it exists, so it's crazy talk.

So, it must be GOD pushing down every object with his invisible hands.

Makes crazy sense guys, I'm a believer now.

Do we? That's funny, I've never once experience this supposed "mass attraction" phenomenon. Are you sure?

Postitive.  I've never "experienced" it either, except for my attraction to the earth.  I'm sure you don't believe that.

Anyway, we have tools to measure gravity, and ALL mass has slight gravity.  Large buildings have small amounts of gravity, but they aren't big enough for you or I to notice.  But scientists can read it with certain tools (the name of the tool slips my mind at the time, but I actually once had the chance of using one when I was a small kid).

Sure, I know lots of things. I looked out my window and saw a mountain. I smelled the flowers. I tasted the iced tea.

I think the point has always been not to take things for granted. I'm not trying to say "No one knows anything", I'm trying to make the distinction between personal experience and hearsay.

This is true. Don't you think it's the slightest bit convenient that the only noticable example of this "gravity" is the one thing we can't take as given; that being the shape of the earth?

No, because the only thing large enough to exert a noticeable force of gravity to normal people without tools is the earth. Other experiments have been conducted using specialised tools and in space... however Flat Earther's would claim these results have been faked, but have no good reason WHY they should have been, it just backs up their argument... now THAT'S convenient.

Did you bother to google "Intelligent Falling"?
Did you realize that the "theory" was first published in the "Onion", a deliberately satirical magazine/internet site?

That said, I defy you to design an experiment that I myself can perform and will prove to me that gravity exists.

Did you read the post above yours? You need a mass far far bigger than anything you could hold in your hand in a home experiment. But if you really want one, pick up your computer screen, hold it high above your head, then drop. See? Gravity pulls the screen down towards your face.

Incorrect, the earth's acceleration pushes him up towards the monitor.

But I think that was his point, that there is no experiment you or I can perform to verify, for ourselves, that gravity really exists, and isn't some big joke being played on us by the scientific community.

If the Earth is continuously accelerating wouldn't it eventually be going past the speed of light, which is impossible?

Sorry, but I have to correct you in this point (I hate doing this, but for the sake of science, I will bear this pain).

There is an experiment, its that of Cavendish. It does not only prove that there is gravity between masses, this experiment also allows to determine the strength of that force (using ND, which should be sufficient for this discussion). There is a manual on the web: http://www.fourmilab.com/gravitation/foobar/

This will help you step by step to experience the miracle of gravity in your own living room. This may enrich your life.

Yours Sincerely

hehehe, I think I was the one who posted that ages ago. No I am not a flat earther, I just posted it as a joke.
