because there have been numerous similar feats.

And, apart from during open warfare few planes have been downed deliberately.
I can think of two cases but both were due to misidentication.

I had a look, and there are 21 known aircraft crashes and 4 known shipwrecks all resulting in casualties, at or around Antarctica. It's just not the sort of place to build your dream mansion or a holiday resort.
