I asked the same. Somebody said it is because of refraction. No satisfying answer at all.

Refraction would actually make the Sun apear higher then it is the same way thing apear higher when you are looking up at them from underwater.

I have read the wiki, I was just saying that refraction can't possibly cause Sunsets unless the atmosphere gets denser as you get higher, but if you have ever been on a mountain you would know that that's not the case because the air is noticeably thinner.

Refraction has little to do with it, really.
The word isn't even used on the sunset page on the wiki.
