I'm using this with my new $1400 headphones, with the bs2b crossfeed effect for more comfortable sound:

Code: [Select]
pcm.wraphw {
type plug
slave {
pcm "hw:2,0"
channels unchanged
rate unchanged
format S24_3LE
}
}

pcm.bs2b {
type ladspa
slave {
pcm wraphw
}

channels 2
path "/usr/lib/ladspa"
playback_plugins.0 {
label bs2b
input.controls [ 730 12.4 ]
}
}

pcm.headphone {
type plug
slave {
pcm bs2b
rate unchanged
channels unchanged
}
}

pcm.default headphone

I've deliberately ensured that neither of the plug devices in the chain can resample the audio -- they only exist to convert from whatever sample format the audio is in to 32-bit float for LADSPA processing, and then to 24-bit samples for output to the DAC.

More people should use Linux. ALSA is really a beautiful maiden once you get used to her quirks.

I have tried. Its not what I need. I like playing the odd game, I don't want to have to find a man with a beard on the internet every time I want to add a new piece of software and I don't want to learn a language that is dying. I have no complaints about Windows 7. None. It is absolutely perfect for me. Fast, does everything I want, never breaks, crashes, never had a virus, never refused to do something ... its everything an operating system should be.

I used to use Unix at work. I hated it. Up a directory. Down directory. Enquire about this, enquire about that. type type type. Correct syntax, can't remember this, forgotten how to phrase that. I put Ubuntu on my last laptop. It was so basic. And then I couldn't get rid of it. The bootloader was on the laptop forever moar. Like a virus that had infiltrated my laptop.

No, point and click. Windows is made for monkeys and I like this banana.

You might be interested in trying Fedora or OpenSUSE. They're Linux for monkeys, which is precisely why I detest them.

No, I'm interested in using the worlds best OS. The one I paid £70 for. The one from a fortune 500 company. the one I know how to use inside out.

Install Gentoo.
Shave your head. I would find using Linux daily every bit as uncomfortable.

The man with the beard said you are not doing Linux right.

Virtually all popular Linux distros have a built in GUI, so I don't know why you did not have one, unless you installed a server edition.

Just use the Windows repair software to fix you MBR.  The Windows boot loader will not recognize Linux or any other OS by design, so for Linux, you have to use another one.  Which means you have to replace it when you get rid of Linux.

My current PC (4 months old) has never had Linux on it, so does not suffer from bootloader disease. Its fine. Everything works just as I want it to. That's the way I would like to keep it.

Meh. Thork is right for the most part. If you play modern games, windows is what you want.
Linux, as Steve has just demonstrated, requires knowlege of very specific coding, scripting, and variables to fine tune. While its easy enough to get this info online, it's still more than the average user wants to know about their OS.

Heck, I know more about Linux and I don't have it installed on my pc, just a VM.

No. Advanced features in Linux require such knowledge, and one of its appealing characteristics is that it lets you fine-tune the behaviour of many aspects to a great degree, if you have the time and patience to learn how. But you don't need to know how to manually configure a DSP chain in ALSA to listen to music on Linux, any more than you need to understand how the Windows registry works to install software on Windows.

what, you can't play games on Linux?  There are hundreds, if not thousands of games you can play on Linux.  And, most are free, as in free beer.

Let me rephrase:
Modern games produced for windows. Games like Mass Effect 3 and Diablo 3 and Tribes: Ascention and games you find on Steam.
These games are written for windows. They don't always work well in WINE and getting some to work requires some tinkering.

Linux, as Steve has just demonstrated, requires knowlege of very specific coding, scripting, and variables to fine tune.

I used fine tune in the same context as advanced features. I never claimed you couldn't listen to music, I claimed that you can't do what you did (for whatever reason) without learning quite a bit.

What for? The whole point of steam is that you can buy games online. Well Linux doesn't really do games - if you are going to run your games in WINE then run steam in it too. Also, Steam is proprietary software which will automatically alienate a chunk of the pious Linux community.

Again, irrelevant. I was responding to your claim that you need to learn a lot to do advanced things in Windows, which isn't relevant to Thork. The matter of games is a different issue.

Just because someone does not like to pay for an OS does not mean they will not pay for a good game.

Furthermore, just because someone uses Linux doesn't mean they don't like to pay for an OS. I don't pay for an OS because commercial operating systems tend to be utter rubbish, and the ones that aren't rubbish still aren't worth their price tag.

The fact that my OS comes at no charge is largely due to the fact that community-driven development results in a better end product, and it just happens that communities don't charge money for their efforts.

However, I would pay for a commercial OS if it was significantly better than my other options, and if it was free software.
