The record is currently held by those engineering wizards, the Brits.
However the US are unhappy and so are building this ...

Its aim, to be a bit quicker and reach 808 mph.

But as with Thrust SCC, where humiliating the Americans is not enough so they went for the sound barrier, the Brits are going to try and heap more pain on the merkins.

They are going for the 1000 mph mark. They also have a cool logo.

World leaders in the brains department.

That is all.
EDIT: I should qualify that I wasn't just needlessly spouting off about how wonderful the British are again. It is topical. :)

The land speed record is so stupid. :P

It is pretty much just whoever can strap the biggest rocket to a car, and make sure that it doesn't accidentally lift off.

But the balance between downforce and speed is a difficult one to get right.

lol, symbolism. Long, glistening cars penetrating that sound barrier. How many female drivers have attempted this?
Here's an explanation for ya. Lurk moar. Every single point you brought up has been posted, reposted, debated and debunked. There is a search function on this forum, and it is very easy to use.

Yes, but the answer to that is 'the British'. We can strap a jet engine to a car better than anyone else on the planet. Others have tried. Most notably the Americans, but the British are just better at it.

He wouldn't understand. Only the British are able to master this.

I don't think that it's as much a matter of British "cleverness" or "mastery".  I think that it's more a matter of who's project is better funded.

Bullshit! How offensive. Don't rubbish the wonderful achievements of my countrymen. The nation throwing cash at the problem is the US. Always has been. From 1997 ...

Spirit of America team may have been well funded, but North American Eagle team is not.

So what? You suggested that only those with a large budget could be successful. I have shown you that the Brits managed to claim the last competition with less than a quarter of the budget. North American Eagle Team have yet to achieve anything lest we forget. I have a tiny budget for breaking the land speed record and my Renault is virtually unmodified. No one is taking my challenge seriously because I haven't yet put down a fast time. I will try again the next time I am on the M4. The point is despite the notable handicap of having a small budget the Brits triumphed last time. Who cares what the budget is? I think however the merkins will not be able to pull off the same trick. It reads quite grim for them

The contrast between the two teams could not be greater. While the Bloodhound SSC (it stands for supersonic car) is the most advanced streamliner ever built and will cost around 6.3m GBP, Shadle has built his machine out of the rusty remains of a 1957 Lockheed F-104 Starfighter jet, bought for $25,000 (15,000 GBP at today's prices) from a scrapyard in 1998.

If I was a betting man ...

Anyway I would rather focus on the super achievements of the British, over the impending annihilation facing the US. Please note Bloodhound will still be around than half the cost of the failed Spirit of America.

I said that money is a factor.  I didn't say that it was the only factor.  After all, supersonic travel is expensive regardless of the vehicle.

Actually, the most important factor is determination.   Don't worry, land speed records are made to be broken.
